Orginally there were five tribes that made up the Iroquois. They were: Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, and Cayuga. The Huron and Cherokee tribes are distant relatives of the Iroquois. The Iroquois lived in what is now called New York state. They men hunted, traded, and particpated in war, while the women farmed and raised the family.

The Iroquois were actually a confederation of several tribes which ranged as far west as Ohio. Their confederacy was the model for our federal/state gov't. They were the only Native Amerians to have a written language. Many were fair skinned, had blue eyes, which gave way to the theory that they were a "lost tribe" of Israel.

Iroquois Indians are Native Americans from the general New York area. Six tribes (Cayuga, Oneida, Mohawk, Seneca, Onondaga and Tuscarora) make up the Iroquois Confederacy, they were generally hunters, fisherman, and farmers.
