Start with ankle pumps, glute contractions and ankle rotations, then build to quad sets, abduction and straight leg raises. ALWAYS consult with your physician and your physical therapist for recommendations and advice on how much and how often to do your exercises.

You have to be careful after a hip replacement so the best exercises to do after that type of surgery are exercises that do not go past 90 degrees of flexion. For example, you can do standing or side lying kicks and half circles.

Leg lifts while in a chair or in bed for a few minutes each day, walking in spurts will also help, but make sure, with any exercise routine, you check with your doctor and make sure to implement the plan set up by your physical therapist.

After surgery, start by walking. Then you can add in some heel slides, done lying on you back and sliding the heel toward your butt.

You should get a referral to a physical therapist who will work on a regimen with you and guide you through the exercises and monitor your progress. Planning your own physical therapy is dangerous. It can slow progress and even prevent proper healing.
