A common funeral poem is "Crossing the Bar" by Alfred Lord Tennyson. This is an especially apt poem if you live in a coastal area or if the deceased person liked boating. Another good poem for a funeral are various verses from Psalms, which is basically a collection of poems. Psalms 23 is the most commonly chosen for funerals.

The most appropriate poems are ones which you write yourself. The poem should encompass both your friend's personality and your personal connection to him. Hopefully, those who are listening feel those same connections, but regardless, people need to take as much as they individually can away from a funeral.

"Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep" is a beautiful funeral poem which uses spiritual-- but not necessarily religious-- imagery to tell the story of someone who has died telling the person missing them that they are in everything-- the birds, the sunlight, the flowers-- but that they are not in the grave.

Here are two suggestions - one about death and one about friendship. Both are well known. "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" Emily Dickinson "Friends" W.B. Yeats

There are two types of poems you may want to consider - death or immortality poems and ones about friendship. Some recommended poems about death are Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" and "No Coward Soul is Mine" by Emily Bronte. A nice one about friendship is "When You are Old" by William Butler Yeats.
