Birthday parties for a 40 year old can include themes such as "Over the Hill" where people dress in black and white to the era in which the person grew up in. If the person grew up in the 70's a "Disco Party" theme would be appropriate. The possibilities are endless.

For a 40th birthday I would use a theme that we used for my father. We had black candles and cake as well as decorations and they all said over the hill too old to count. My aunt did this for my uncle and borrowed a walker as a gag.

Find a small hill area. Invite guests for an over the hill picnic. Everyone bring wine and snack to toast the birthday person a farewell and good luck. If it is a night time party, invite everyone to dress their sexiest and celebrate been at their prime. Dance the night away.
