Rat mites are mites of the genus Laelaps. They are parasites of multiple rodent species, not just rats like the name implies. Probably the best known example is Laelaps echidninus - the spiny rat mite. This mite is a relatively common problem for pet rats and may require veterinary intervention for the associated skin problems.
