Ernest Hemingway's "iceberg principle," or "theory of omission" is outlined in his book, "Death in the Afternoon." It says, basically, that a writer who knows his subject can omit things he knows to be true, and the reader will still understand them. But omissions due to ignorance leave "hollow places."

Hemingway used this principle by not providing detail to his reader. Only the tip of the iceberg is exposed to the reader.
