On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was officially approved by the Congress of the United States of America. While it is widely believed that the Declaration was signed on this day, it was actually signed about a month later. Thomas Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence.

On July 4, 1776 the United States officially declared independence from Britain. Members of the Second Continental Congress, including Thomas Jefferson, drafted the Declaration of Independence. Although the Declaration was formally adopted and published on July 4, 1776, many of the signatures were added after the fact since not all of the delegates were present in Philadelphia at the time.
