Were there submarines in ancient times?

The first known submarine was built in the early 1600s. It may have been inspired by a design published around 1580. There is a legend involving Alexander the Great using a submersible similar to a diving bell, but there are no known instances of true submarines having been constructed before 1600 AD.

Many ancient civilizations had advanced ships for their times, but no civilization was ever to make a ship that cound function underwater. So in short, no there were no submarines in ancient times.
