To the nearest minute and second, what is the first time after 12:00 that the hour hand and minute hand of a clock meet?

Since the hour hand will move off the 12 the next opportunity would be at 0100 and would require it to be 5 minuets after the hour to line up, the second hand would line up within a fraction at 5 seconds after the minute so the answer is: 01:05:05

Actually its 01:05:27 (roughly), you can tell that your working is wrong because by adding 5 minutes 5 seconds to each hour you end up with the hands meeting at 11:55:55 after a 12 hour cycle when they should be together at 12  add a comment

Well if you go by this pattern the next time the clock should meet both minute and hour hands, is 1:05. Both of the hands will be on the 1. The hands will meet one time, every hour and then at 12 both hands will meet directly at the top of the clock.

If you want a somewhat complicated answer, they meet up 11 times every 12 hours. There are 43,200 seconds in 12 hours. Divide that by 11, and you get 3927.272727 seconds between every interval. Divide that by 60, and that's how many minutes after 12. Answer: 1:05:27.272727...
