The St. Tammany Hospital is listed as an "acute care" facility. What does that mean?

They are capable of accepting patients who need urgent treatment probably through an Accident and Emergency department. They would for example admit heart attack,severe infection,road traffic accident,gunshot wounds,any severe injury,strokes,convulsions and the like, at any hour and would have medical staff on hand 24 hourly with full emergency investigation and treatment facilities available on standby including OT and Intensive Care.

The term "acute" basically means "not chronic," and it is used to describe injuries or illnesses which have happened recently. Acute care facilities treat these injuries and illnesses, such as appendicitis, hernias, muscle injuries, and others.
