Question by  ScottTerp (1)

Whom in the hospital chain of command should I speak to about the hospital padding the bill?

I am a cancer patient getting follow up care. I have no insurance. I got a quote before the procedure and wrote them a check. AFTER the procedure, I got a bill for three times the amount.

Go to the hospital and talk to their ombudsman or patient advocate. Your case is stronger if you have the initial quoted price in writing. You can also challenge the extra fees or charges if they are higher than you were quoted. If they require you pay for additional services, ask for proof they were performed.

You should start with the Hospital Administrator, the person that is holding the financial helm of the hospital, and then the manager of Accounts Payable. Make sure you keep the proverbial paper trail of dates, times, names, and the proposed solution to your crisis.

It is nearly impossible to project the full and complete costs of ever procedure. The final bill likely isn't "padded" (which is fraud) so first ask for an explanation of the itemized bill. If you see a false accounting, ask to speak to a supervisor and continue upward.
