Yes you should wash your face before applying medication. You should also wash your hands often and before touching any part of your body. It is very infectous so keep the area clean.

Usually you just wash your face with normal face cleaner. If the herpes simplex is really bad then i suggest that you go to a drug store and get some medicine for it. The medicine will not effect you washing your face with warm water and soap on any normal day.

Yes you still need to keep your face clear of bacteria, or the dirt and oil that collects will just exacerbate the herpes simplex outbreak. You should use a gentle soap without harsh chemicals, like peroxides which are found in some acne face washes. You should also avoid applying lotion to the area.

Yes, the face must be cleaned in order to remove germs that might worsen the condition. Do it gently and with gloves on so that the herpes does not spread to the hands and finally to other parts of the body. Clean the face using a clean face towel or sponge and mild face soap by dabbing and not rubbing.

It's okay to wash your face, but you shouldn't scrub the infected area; also, be careful to wash that area last so you do not spread the highly contagious fluid over other parts.
