Please explain the end of the new "Planet of the Apes"?

At the end of the movie , Captain Leo Davidson fixes the spaceship with the help of Ari who fell in love with him and succeeds to returns to Earth , but he faces a real surprise here , humans are living as slaves in the world because the Apes are in charge also on Earth.

The film leads us to believe that it took place in primitive times, shortly after dinosaurs stopped roaming the earth. At the end it is revealed by the exposing of the broken Statue of Liberty that the events were actually in modern times.

The Mark Wahlberg character had changed the space time-continum and entered a parrallel universe where apes were the dominant animal and not humans. It was an attempt to be ironic.

It is an open-ended ending. There really is no explanation for it in terms of plot. Tim Burton made this ending as a joke because he was coerced to make an ending that would leave open the door for a sequel. But, the movie never did well enough to warrant one...

The original Planet of the Apes ends with charlton heston travelling down the ocean and coming across the former statue of liberty. He finally realized that he was not on another planet but on earth far in the future. He was upset that the human race had finally destroyed itself.

General Thade, the bad ape, got to Earth at an earlier time using the other ship,and became a hero on Earth, the Lincoln Memorial is now a memorial to him.

So, the main character finds a giant statue at the end of the movie. It turns out that it is the statue of liberty. The big spoiler for this movie is that there is no "Planet of the Apes." The movie takes place on earth far in the future. Shocking.

That one kind of confused me at first too. I think what it meant was that history got things wrong again. Even though the human in the movie saved everyone and the gorilla was the bad guy, the gorilla was still remembered as the hero. I'll admit though, the ending was a little too anticlimactic.
