Chain stitch is the starter stitch. If you are making something circular (doily), you join the chain in a circle. Otherwise, you will turn back on the chain and start with other stitches, slipping your needle into the hole of each chain stitch. Learn single, double, and triple crochet next.

After mastering the chain stitch in crochet, you should try your hand at harder and more complex stitches such as the single crochet stitch, the double crochet stitch and the slip stitch. Once you have mastered all those, you should be able to make simple blankets, scarves and other easy projects.

If you have done the foundation row, with the chain stitch you have learned, you will need to "turn" the work over (thus working on the "wrong" side) in order to continue working the next or 2nd row. Continue on in this manner, until you have the crocheted the amount that you want.
