My new A/C keeps freezing up even though there is a clean filter, freon topped off, now what?

Where are these coils?

Is this for a car, or for a house, or for what? If it's a split system, you may have put too much freon in it. If you have put too much freon in it, you may not have enough refrigeration experience to mess with it any further and should call a professional.

Check to see if your AC unit has a drain pipe or hose. Find out where this drain is and if it working correctly. If the drain is clogged, bent, or blocked so that the water can not escape, this will cause the unit to not cool your home and form ice on the outside unit.

A freezing AC is far from uncommon. Even with a full freon level and a clean filter it will freeze for a number of reasons. The compressor runs with the aid of an evaporator fan. Most freezing problems are due to this fan not running when the compressor does. Allow the AC to thaw and check the fan.

Believe it or not, your air conditioning is probably working fine. If you happen to live in an area where there are extremely high levels of humidity during the summer, you will often find that your smaller a/c unit tends to freeze up, many times you can just shut it off and it will work fine again later.

IF your system is properly charged and the evaporator coil is clenaed peoperly the unit should not freeze, No matter how much humidity there is, Airflow is key  add a comment

The coils are in both units, Most likely you need the Evaporator coil which should be inside the house, Possibly in the attic or closet or garage.

Remember they can be damaged very easily please have them cleaned professionally  add a comment

I have been told that my system freezes up because too much is being required of it. We have a 2. 5 ton, and we need a 3 ton. Also, the seer level is too low. When it freezes, we turn it off for about an hour then turn it back on.

Reply by Ionoone (112):
Seer level is just an efficeincy rating, there is no required level for size of house.. Just how efficeint you want your system. I would have your evaporator coil cleaned proffessionaly, Not by the person that said your seer rating is to low for your house either.  add a comment
