Blood in the stool can be caused by a variety of things. This can be a sign of: parvo, coccidia, parasites, gastroentenitis. Depending on the cause this could be life threatening. You really want your vet to see the dog in question and do a fecal exam to determine the cause of the blood, so you may treat the problem.

If the blood is red in color it is fresh and likely due to a small rectal tear caused by hard stool that will usually heal on its own. If the blood is black in color it is due to intestinal bleeding and you should see a vet immediately to check for anemia and other possible complications.

It depends on the color of the blood. Fresh bright red blood comes lower in the digestive tract and can be the result of parasites in younger dogs, cancer in older dogs. If the stools are dark and tarry, it can be a result of several things from a foreign body in the stomach to a bleeding disorder or even cancer.
