This could be from an insect bite, bee sting, infection, or abscession. If it seems to be very painful, it would be wise to call your veterinarian as soon as possible. If left untreated, it will get worse very quickly.

Take your dog to the vet. It could be something like a sprain or there might be something wrong with some bones, muscles or tendons. There might be something stuck in their paw that you can't see that made it swollen. It's always best to talk to your vet about things like this so you get the right medical attention.

Examine the paw to determine the reason for swelling. If an object has caused the swelling, remove the object. The paw should then be soaked in antiseptic and water. Other causes of swollen paws include allergies and red mange. Contact your vet if you believe this to be the case, or if the paw appears to be infected.

First rinse the area with water to clear any dirt and debris. Check and see if you can see the cause of the swelling,ie. splinter, bite, thorn, tick, etc. If nothing can visually be seen, take pet to the vet immediately. They can determine the cause and get relief to the area quickly.
