Canine melanomas usually appear as black or dark brown lumps appearing in mouth, toes or behind the eyes. Get the mole examined if it spreads, bleeds or raises above the skin. The vet may take a blood test or do a biopsy to determine if it is malignant.

It could be many different things. Just like there are tumor that are cancerous and non-cancerous, there are also skin lesions that can be cancerous and others that are non-cancerous. I would suggest taking the animal to a vet to have them do a test; many state colleges have vet schools that do this fairly inexpensive as well.

To find out if the mole is cancer you have to get a biopsy done by a veterinarian and have it checked out in a lab. If the mole is growing suddenly, has uneven edges, is bloody, etc, it should be checked to see if it is cancer.

If your pet has a sore that looks suspicious, it would be wise to take your pet to a veterinarian. It could be a very simple problem or it could be much more serious.

If your pet has a lesion, my suggestion is to take your pet to a veterinarian. It could be something serious or it could be as simple as a scratch that has now become infected. It would be wise to have a vet take a look.

Not unlike humans, as animals age they develop spots, lesions, and markings which seem to appear out of nowhere. Your dog may simply be showing his age.

Some breeds are prone to contact dermatitis; your dog may have rubbed against something that caused an irritation. Monitor the lesion; if it doesn't improve consult your vet.

A lesion like this could be a sign of skin cancer, or it may be related to something less severe. See your veterinarian to have the lesion evaluated.
