Is the NHL an American league?

I know a ton of Russians and Canadians play on NHL teams, but like the NFL and NBA, is the NHL an American institution?

The NHL actually originated in Montreal, and all of the original teams were in Canada, but it has slowly spread to the US, and now 24 of the 30 teams are in the US. However, almost half of the players are from Canada, while only 15 percent are from the US, so it is still more of a Canadian league.

The National Hockey League is a league played in North America. Teams come from cities in both the United States and Canada.
