It depends on what your goals are regarding auto repair. The "Dummies" books are intended to give a general overview to increase understanding of information that is often lost of many people. The vehicle-specific Chilton Manuals would be preferred by someone who actually want to tackle auto repair. The Dummies book will make you more knowledgeable of the field.

It depends on what kind of help you're looking for. The book gives a nice overview with simple explanation and illustrations for someone with little or no knowledge. It is not intended to be a repair manual for someone who wants to DIY car repair.

It's not really helpful. There are very few repairs to modern automobiles which are realistically within the abilities of the average person. If you need help at the dummy level it's best just to forget about the book, and take your car to a trained mechanic.

The book is a good introduction to the subject. The content gives all the necessary technical information but yet it remains easy to understand.

Auto Repair for Dummies is a great no-nonsense book that can teach you the basics of home auto maintenance. It gives you a straightforward overview of the different systems in a car, and teaches you in a direct but not condescending way. It's very helpful for people who are beginners at car maintenance or need a refresher.

If you are not very knowledgeable about cars then yes it could be beneficial. It will give you general knowledge about cars. However I think it wouldn't help you with more than learning basic troubleshooting. For repairing your own car I recommend a model specific repair manual.
