A metacarpal fracture can usually be treated with the use of a cast. Some situations might require surgery, for example if more than one metacarpal is broken, Or an open fracture occurs.Your doctor will determine if the finger is shortened because of the fracture. That will require surgery.

Surgery would not be necessary to fix a broken metacarpal. A metacarpal has something to with the wrist. I am not a doctor but I came to this conclusion using the second part of the word 'carpal' only. It made me think of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
