If she's just a friend then u can get to know from certain symtoms, for example if she does not shares her secret with you, she talks to you in a formal way. If it is the case then yes she is just a friend.

You can pick up clues from her, does she go out of the way to make you happy, or show an interest in things you like?

By just looking at her eyes, I can tell if she is just a friend. This is because eyes can express the actual feelings of a person.
