Estrus is also referred to as the mares heat cycle which normally happens in the warmer months that lasts any where from 18 to 30 days. While in heat the mare may act differently towards other horses. Depending on individual mares, she may act nasty towards other females and very interested in stallions or geldings.

If your mare is restless and runs around a lot and doesn't eat as much as usual, she may be in estrus. Other signs are frequent urination and assuming a squatting position.

You will know when a mare is in estrus when she is squirting upon approaching other horses and if her vulva is winking when you lift her tail. Often mares in estrus also squeel or scream at other horses and act particularly moody.

Mare's during this time stand calmly, squat and evert the labia of the vulva in the presence of a stallion. If not in estrus, mare's are more agitated with stallions.
