For example you can find the open source office-type software called Open Office. This will also run on XP of any flavor and will not require the learning curve that Office 2007 currently requires.

Yes, all version of Microsoft Office should be compatible with Windows XP Pro. Even versions released for Windows 7 should have a backwards compatible installation capability. If you use a newer version of Office with an older version of XP, so newer features may not work, but it still will be functional.
