no kvm is not essential over ip , ip is completely dominated the whole world and everyone knows it rules.kvm is not a valid set of rules its only indications.

If you are controlling remote location servers, then definitely, other remote control software only work when the server has booted into it's Operating System. A KVM over IP will give you console access to your equipment no matter what.
