Is it true that cicada killer stings don't hurt?

Though large and intimidating, cicada killers are typically not aggressive towards people and usually will not sting. The sting, though not painless, is much less painful than more aggressive wasps' like yellow jackets. The males do not have stingers at all, and the females will likely only sting if handled or harassed.

The male cicada killer has no stinger and therefore will not harm or hurt you. The females on the other hand can sting, but rarely do unless they are provoked into it. The sting if it happens is usually mild for most people and don't cause as much pain as a regular wasp sting.

No, it is not true. Though the sting does not contain venom, it will hurt if a cicada killer wasp stings you. That said, the cicada killer wasp rarely stings, opting instead to aggressively fly around any intruder to scare it off. Given the horrifying size of these wasps, the aggressive fly-by tactic is usually sufficient.

Though cicada killers do not normally sting people, they will do so if disturbed. The female is capable of stinging but rarely does and the male is incapable of stinging but is more aggressive generally, especially during mating season. Cicada killer stings are reportedly very painful, possibly because of the size of their venom load.

Yes it does hurt when the cicada stings. That being said they rarely sting and only the female stings. The pain is not as bad as that of a more aggresive wasp.

Cicada Killer Wasps only sting humans very rarely, and only the females can sting at all... but if you are stung it *will* hurt.

Well I don't think it is true. I know someone who has been stung and said it was really painful.

I was stung twice the other day. The bites itch, but mosquito bites are much more annoying.
