I have personally met people online in person. It can be safe as long as it is done with thought and preparation. Meeting someone in a public venue is best. If done in public and notifying someone that you are doing so ahead of time, it can be safe.

It is never entirely safe to meet up with someone online, but you can take risks to mitigate the risk. If you do meet up with someone, make sure that the first meeting is in a public place and that others know where you are.

There are some bad stories. If you're going to meet, try to do it in a public "first-date" type setting. Lots of people on dating sites meet all the time. It's best to chat for a while, get some pictures, and get a sense of personality before doing it.

It is NOT safe to meet up with someone that you know only through the Internet. Never do this, your life could be in danger.
