Lymph nodes in underarm can't usually be felt normally. They can be enlarged due to bacterial, fungal and viral infections, certain vaccines, and certain cancers.

Yes thickening of lower axillary lymph nodes is possible and is also a symptom of breast cancer. Abnormal lymph nodes are often seen in the tissues near the axillary tail, where core needle biopsy can be performed safely and easily. An abnormal lymph node has a thickened or eccentrically bulged cortex and a diminished or absent hilum.

Some people have greater reactions to infections and can exhibit lymph node chains which appear to be very prominent. Depending on circumstances, these axillary lymph nodes can regress (shrink) or even get larger. If they continue to grow or ar sore, you should see a physician for a full workup.
