I once had a spy-ware program that wouldn't run and I had to run a second spy-ware program to clean the first one so yes it is possible.

It depends on the virus protection software. There is a lot of software around that is fake. Often pop ups and pop unders advertise free virus protection software that is actually a virus. Stick with the best known and rated software like Malwarebytes, AVG Free, Lavasoft Ad Aware, and Hi Jack This.
