Is it okay to have only 2 x 4s holding up a roof?

No. 2x4's are for walls and are not to be used for holding up a house. These usually run on 2x8 and are usually make out of a heavier wood. You will also use joists to hold them in place.

It is okay it the are mounted and joined correctly and being held by quality materials. They have to be nailed together properly as well to prevent weak spots in the roof.

2x4 rafters generally aren't strong enough except for small buildings like a garden shed. Your local building supply center can usually tell the size you need if you have dimensions.

Depends on how many 2x4's. Wall frames are usually made of 2x4's however for a heavier roof larger beams are required.

You need to check the local building code in your county. If it was framed properly it should be o.k but it sounds like maybe you have a roof that is not up to code. You could probably contact a local contractor to come in and tell you if the roof will pass inspection.
