Is it okay to have a mailbox with a lock for a private home?

It is absolutely okay. Make sure that there is a slot for the mail to go in and that your mail deliverer knows where to put the mail.

One would assume that it is entirely appropriate for homeowners to secure their mailboxes with a locking mechanism. In today's society, there are an increasing number of identity thefts often resulting from personal information gleaned from stolen mail. To lock the mailbox makes good sense.

Even though you are the owner of the mailbox, it isn't advisable that you have a lock on it. Reason being is that mailboxes are treated as public // city property. The mailmen need to get in and out of them, and if they can't they report them.
