Is it more likely to have a small intestine blockage when you have your large intestine removed?

I am going to have my large intestines removed due to kidney disease and am worried about developing lower Kidney problems.

There is a slight increase in the chance of lower intestine blockage, but it is not very significant. The large intestine reduces the volume of chyme that exits the stomach and filters it somewhat, but the small intestine keeps up pretty well. So it's more likely, but not too concerning.

It is not any more likely to get a small intestine blockage with or without the large intestine in situ. The two systems are largely seperate. You will probably just have problems with the ostomy site.

Any time previous abdominal surgery has taken place, there is a greater chance for other intra abdominal complications, including those of the small and large intestines. Removal of the small intestine will definitely have an affect on large bowel function, though blockage is an extreme occurrence.

Discuss your surgery with your physician. Make a list of questions to discuss before you have surgery and ask for details of any post-op difficulties you should be aware of.
