If no one is home, set the temperature to 75+ degrees as air conditioning also saps humidity and prevents mold growth: You still want it to run, but only occasionally. It will take less energy to cool it to 70 or below in the evening as evenings are generally cooler than the middle of the day.

It is more efficient to keep the house at a cool temperature throughout the day. In the evening, you can then adjust the thermostat to your desired temperature.

It is best to keep the home cool all day. If you allow the home to get warm, everything in it gets warm. Then even when the outside temp is cool, the furniture and the walls and everything is rejecting heat into the space that has to be removed byAC

It is more worthwhile to run the air in the hot weather. The second option would be to suffer all day long and then cooling down in the evening. It is like having no breakfast and no lunch but heavy dinner.

An air-conditioner at a constant temperature is more efficient. Trying to recover from a day of heat. The energy air-conditioners consumes is due to the pressure difference caused by the load applied. Running all day, the AC catches up when the evening heat penetrates. If only started in the evening, the AC recovers the whole day's heat in the same period.
