Is it common for an air conditioning fan motor to get very hot to the touch?

I have noticed over the past several days that my a/c fan motor is getting really hot when it is in use.

Fan cycle switch may go high, may shut off the fuel to the furnace. The motor after running through a cycle should feel warm but not hot. If it is an older unit then it has sleeve bearings. Turn power off, check motor for 2 little oil plugs on each end, it will state "apply 10 drops of oil yearly".

Which fan? The outdoor fan will be so hot that you don't want to touch it. The indoor fan will not be as hot. Both fans are cooled while they run by the air that is drawn across. Once you shut them off, the heat gains quickly. During operation is when the temperature is measured with an infared heat gun.
