Is it expensive to raise ceilings?

We did not finish the room above the kitchen, so I have room on top.

Yes, it can be expensive, depending on whether you'll have a load-bearing surface above the new raised ceiling (sounds like yes), if you'll affect load-bearing vertical members (sounds like no), the square footage and the quality of the materials. Get specific estimates from three reputable carpenters.

It depends on the materials you will use and if you will need to reinforce the roof. It is best to have a licensed contractor look and give an estimate.

If there is room between the current ceiling and rafter supports, then you can raise the ceiling. However, you cannot cut into the structural members of your house to do so without doing significant damage.
