It's quite common to have a sore tongue after a dental procedure, because you may have unknowingly bitten it while your mouth was numbed. It is usually not a dentist's fault, but just a mishap of you biting it without knowing.

i would guess that it is somewhat common. if it's a procedure that involves lots of instruments being used on your teeth, it's probable that something could have slipped...

Yes, it is perfectly normal for your tongue or any other part of your mouth to hurt immediately after a dental procedure. The dentist gave you shots in different areas of your mouth and you should feel pain from each of the injection sites. You'll also experience some discomfort and soreness from holding your mouth open for so long.

It is possible to have a sore tongue if there is a surgical procedure done, especially one that is performed near or on the facial nerve for the tongue.
