Gypsum is a natural additive that many people use to soften soil and help improve drainage over time. However, it doesn't work well on layered soil. The only time it will really benefit layered soil is when you need to increase the calcium levels. If you are tilling, it will help keep the ground from compacting.

Adding gypsum to your lawn twice a year, in spring and fall, can help break up dense soil, especially soil with a high clay content. It also adds nutrients to the soil and isn't toxic.
