Actually, it was developed as both. There were 115 episodes on TV from 1976 to 1979. There were also three movies developed from the book, Candy Candy the Movie (1992),Candy Candy's Summer Vacation (1978) and Candy Candy: The Call of Spring/The May Festival (1978). Distribution of the series has halted due to excessive illegal copies already on the market.
