Birch is an outstanding choice for cabinetry. Birch and maple are the top choices for cabinets; birch is about 80% cheaper. It can be finished almost any color you prefer.

Birch can be very hard to cut and glue. For museum cabinets, mostly oak is used, so you might consider this.
