TD Ameritrade is the result of a merger of Ameritrade and TD Waterhouse, a Canadian group in the business of investment and wealth management. The two combined forces in 1975. The "TD" stands for Toronto-Dominion as in Toronto-Dominion Bank in Canada. TD Ameritrade operates in the US while TD Waterhouse still operates in Canada.

The TD for the TD Ameritrade stands from TransAtlantic which Ameritrade bought them out back in 1998 and change the name from Ameritrade to TD Ameritrade. They also brought several smaller companies around that time as well.

The TD comes from Toronto-Dominion Bank. Ameritrade purchased a majority share of TD Waterhouse from Toronto-Dominion and adopted the TD Ameritrade name after merging US brokerage operations with TD Waterhouse.

TD Ameritrade, or TD Bank, is a Canadian company. The Bank was called Toronto Dominion, but they changed the name to "TD" in order to Americanize it a bit more. They are trying to position themselves as the go-to bank for people that want low fees and a bank that's open every day.
