John Winthrop became the first governor of Massachusetts. Winthrop was a devout Puritan who had been a practicing attorney. Winthrop was born in England and was married three times outliving each wife.

John Carver, a Pilgrim leader was the first governor of Plymouth Colony, the forerunner of what we now call Massachusetts. He took office in 1620. (The governor in 1630 was William Bradford).
