Always start with the fluid. Ckeck to see if its low or has a burnt smell. If it smells burnt you should replace it. Remove the transmission pan and filter. Install new filter and replace the pan with a good RTV type sealer. Put in new fluid being careful not to overfill it. Check fluid level after its warmed up.

Your gonna have to take it to a transmission shop and get it torn down to find out what exactly the problem is. In the mean time you can try a transmission flush to see if that help any.

Usually, transmission problems start when fluid replacement has been neglected. Replace the fluid and filter first, then describe the problem more accurately. Is it failing to shift, shifting roughly, or hanging between gears? There are a lot of components in an automatic transmission, and it's always better to have a better picture of the problem.

Ford Explorers have many serious transmission problems, especially the 2002-2004 models. If you have trouble shifting, it makes grinding noises, or slips between gears, take it for repairs immediately.

Today's automatic transmissions are controlled by numerous electronic devices and a simple answer is not possible. First thing to do is to check condition/level of transmission fluid, following the procedure outlined in your Owner's Manual. The best recommendation is to take your Explorer to your local Ford dealer's service center or to a reliable transmission repair shop.

If you put it in gear and it don't move you need a clutch (manual) or a hydrolic converter (automatic). Anything else should been done by a shop.
