If it is a common catepillar it will not arouse your curiosity. If your curisity is piqued you can be assured the catepillar in question is unique and unusual - at least to you. Enjoy your find with a photograph.

The first thing you should do is observe the caterpillar. Take not of any extremely identifiable traits it has. For example, the color, texture, size, pattern. Take the information you have gathered and do some research, whether it be on the internet or in a book.

If you want to know how to identify caterpillar types, then buy a book about caterpillar types. If you don't want to buy a book, take pictures and notes about the caterpillars you see and try to look on the internet and figure out what type it is.
