You may have other conditions that can cause this cough. If you have allergies, drainage from your nose can cause a constant cough. If you are on any hypertensive medications, it could be a side effect from an ACE inhibitor. If you have heartburn, acid reflux may cause an insidious cough as well.

There are many reasons one would have a constant cough. You don't have to be around smokers or even smoke to have a constant cough. If you use chewing tobacco you can develope a constant cough from the irritation of the chemicals going down the esophagus. You can also cough constantly from allergies to dust and mold.

A constant cough could be simply a sign of allergies or it could indicate something more serious. It is not uncommon for non-smokers to develop lung problems. If the cough is not seasonal, check with your doctor.

You may have mold growing in your basement. An allergy to something can make you cough a lot. Do you have sinus drainage? A drainage running down your throat can give you a cough.
