Question by  kanthaa (14)

If a man drives x miles the first day, y miles the second day and z miles the third day how do I calculate the average mileage?

I do not need the answer just the way to calculate it in order to get the answer.

"Average" or "mean" is found by dividing the sum of your data by the number of pieces of data. So, in this example, it would be (x+y+z)/3.

To calculate the average daily mileage, you add each days mileage together and then divide by the number of days. So in this particular example, you add x plus y plus z and divide by three days. Or (x+y+z)/3. Your answer will have the units of miles per day, or miles/day.
