It depends on how your uterus sits and how big you are in the stomach area. Normally you will hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks. Some women are small and the uterus sits forward so they hear the heartbeat at 9 weeks, other women are bigger and the uterus sits back, you cant hear the heartbeat until about 12 weeks.

Some people hear the heartbeat as early as six weeks. For others it can be as late as ten. You should keep in mind that if you are not sure of your date of conception or ovulation, that determing the weeks can be difficult. A doctor measures the heartbeat with a vaginal ultrasound, or a doppler for older fetuses.

It all depends on how fast the baby develop. The doctors usually make you get safely past your first trimester before they schedule an ultrasound. So plan about four to five months.

Using a Doppler instrument, you should be able to hear the fetal heartbeat around nine weeks or so after your first menstrual period. The Doppler instrument bounces harmless sound waves off of the baby's heart. After 20 weeks or so, you should be able to hear the heartbeat while using a certain type of stethoscope called a fetoscope.
