The heart will be developed in the fourth and fifth week of pregnancy. It will start beating in the sixth week. Do not be alarmed if it is much quicker than your heartbeat. Generally babies heartbeats are twice as fast as your own. Though at this point it will be difficult to hear such a heartbeat.

During the fourth-fifth week after conception the heart develops into a beating four-chambered organ and by eight weeks the heart has completed its development.

Depending on the way your doctor dates your pregnancy on average you will have a heartbeat that is visible on an ultrasound between six and eight weeks along. You will not be able to hear the heartbeat at this time with a stethoscope, the only way to detect it is via ultrasound.
