Your cat will start to urinate in random places other than the litter box. Also, you may find blood in the urine. It might howl when urinating too, due to discomfort. Alternatively, it may stop urinating, or urinate infrequently. If you notice any of these behaviours for more than a couple days you should take the cat to the vet.

Signs to look out for: if the cat is peeing outside of his clean litterbox or if his urine comes out in spurts, take him to see a vet.

Cats will often change their urination habits when they have cystitis. Housebroken cats will suddenly start going in places they've never gone before and will go more often. Other common symptoms would include blood or pus being present in the urine.

The cat's urination habits will change: it may pee more, less, not at all, or in the wrong places. It may also strain or appear to be in pain.
