Hardy perennial geraniums are easy to divide. First dig up the plant. Then, using your hands, tease the clump apart to separate out a portion that includes leaves and roots. A handful about 3" across is usually a good size. Replant at about the same depth.

One of the best ways to divide your cransbill geranium's is to start by pruning them down first. After this dig them up and cut the ball of root in half or even quarters if you would like. The best sizes are those of golf balls as they tend to be easier to handle.

Dividing cransbill geraniums is easy. First deadhead the flowers. I also recommend cutting the plant back. It is best to attempt dividing in the spring or early fall. Split the plant into several pieces. Replant into pots or directly into the ground. You can divide the geraniums every three to five years.

It is very hard to hurt a geranium. Prune radically. If they are really clumping up, you can dig up the plants, chop them in two, separate, and replant.
