The most important thing to keep in mind is to treat him the way you would want to be treated if the situation was reversed. You must also be firm. Tell him why you are breaking up, but don't be mean about it. Show him that your mind is made up and he can't get you to reconsider.

It's best to be straightforward and make shure there is no room for misunderstanding. Do NOT tell him you want to be friends or that it's not him it's you. There's no need to elaborate, and don't fall for "you owe me an explanation". Your final decision has been made, end of story.

The kindest way is to tell him as soon as possible and be straight forward with the reason that you are not choosing to be with him anymore.
